Reading land second Duet gold

Reading Royals landed their second duet gold of the 2014 ASA National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships as Hannah Mulshaw and Alex Turrell claimed top spot in the 15-17 years age group.

Their Spanish themed routine comprised a confident mix of technical difficulty and artistic flair for a routine score of 63.7333 and overall score of 125.7739.

Victory added to Reading teammates Mimi Gray and Abigail Taylor’s win in the U12 age group earlier in the Championships.

Mulshaw, who won gold in the younger age group in 2013, commented on their performance: “We didn’t really expect that at all.

“We didn’t compete at the last competition so it was a really big surprise for both of us.”

Trafford Synchro followed just 0.2 points behind as Fiona Currie and Olivia Monks received 125.5997 for silver, with Rushmoor duo of Alice Bell and Robyn Stanhope taking bronze on 125.1562.

Randall and Cowie perform routine from 2014 Europeans

In the international competition, the England Talent pair took to the pool performing the same routine from the European Championships this year.

Genevieve Randall and Jodie Cowie combined polished figures with good travel and transitions to score 74.8000 and top the overall rankings on 142.4968.

Cowie said: “It went really well, our coach had some really good feedback. The score was a little bit lower than Europeans but we haven’t been training for as long so we’re really pleased.”

Commenting on their funding for the sport, Randall added: “We we’re awarded a scholarship from the British Olympic Association, which allows the duet to train together on a weekly basis with our new coach Paola. We hope to continue to do that all the way to Rio.”
