A guide to the Learn to Swim Programme

Joanna Lay reflects on her journey with GR Swimming School

Joanna Lay is stepping down as director after five years of transforming GR Swimming School. Since taking the helm in 2019, Joanna has led the school to earn multiple awards, including recognition from Swim England and the Institute of Aquaphobia. In a heartfelt social media post, Joanna shared her decision to step back to restore her work-life balance and focus on her health. She expressed confidence in her successor, Anton Bishop, to continue the swim school’s legacy.

In this exclusive Q&A, Joanna reflects on her proudest moments, the challenges she overcame, and her hopes for the future of GR Swimming School.

What key factors have led GR Swimming School to win multiple national awards since 2019?

I had a deep understanding of the school before purchasing it, which made it easier to identify areas that needed improvement. My previous career in risk assessment, organisational management, and child protection also played a key role in shaping our approach. I focused on creating a safe, professional environment by introducing fun, paid staff training and ensuring two-way communication with parents through a monthly bulletin. We adopted the motto ‘Every child is different – Every child is equal,’ which highlighted our commitment to supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Additionally, I brought consistency through themed lessons and developed a strong team dynamic, with staff always willing to support each other. Expanding into adult swimming and aquaphobia classes further enhanced our offerings. My focus on tracking teachers’ qualifications ensured we stayed ahead in safeguarding, long before it became a standard requirement.

Which achievement are you most proud of from your time leading the swim school?

Without a doubt, it’s knowing that we’ve done everything possible to support every individual on their swimming journey. Whether it’s a child learning their first strokes or an adult overcoming their fear of water, seeing their progress and confidence grow has been incredibly rewarding.

What motivated you to become an accredited Centre of Excellence for the Institute of Aquaphobia (IOA)?

My passion for helping people and learning new skills led me to the IOA. Their work is groundbreaking and an industry game-changer. The IOA recognised our efforts early on and awarded us the accreditation for delivering outstanding results and embracing their methods. Being an accredited Centre of Excellence in 2022 was a proud moment that validated our commitment to helping those with water-related fears.

What makes Anton Bishop the right individual to continue the great work at GR Swimming School, and how do his values align with yours?

Anton has been part of GR for a while, and his background and teaching experience are exceptional. We share similar views on the standards and professionalism we expect in swimming education. I’m confident that Anton’s leadership will bring fresh energy while continuing the school’s core values. His dedication to maintaining excellence mirrors mine, and he has my full support and respect.

What legacy do you hope to leave at GR Swimming School?

‘Every child is different – Every child is equal.’ This motto encapsulates our inclusive philosophy, and I hope it remains the guiding principle at GR. My goal has always been to create a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and supported, regardless of their abilities.

Will you remain involved with the school after Anton takes over?

Yes! I’ll continue teaching SEN children, those with medical and physical challenges, group lessons, and aquaphobia clients. Anton and I will also collaborate regularly, sharing ideas and ensuring the school continues to thrive.

What’s next for you?

While I’ll still teach, I’m excited about my new Director of Community Engagement role with the Institute of Aquaphobia. This position allows me to work with professionals worldwide to help millions overcome their fear of water. It’s a new challenge, but one that aligns perfectly with my passion for making water accessible to everyone.
