A guide to the Learn to Swim Programme

Swim England launch free Learn to Swim flash cards in different languages

Swim England has launched new visual resources to support swimming teachers in England and abroad.

The national governing body’s Learn to Swim team have developed flash cards for learners and to help support a variety of learning styles.

Having been created in English – the flash cards are now available in an additional 17 languages.

The translated resources are being provided in the hopes of supporting swimming teachers who may have a language barrier between themselves and their learners.

This work was started following a request from one swimming teacher who has recently started teaching two Ukrainian children and asked for resources to help. Since then due to the popularity of the flash cards, the team has received requests to provide them in more languages.

The flash cards are free and are available to download here. They will be also added into the range of toolkits that are available.

Communication is key

Swim England’s Technical Aquatics Manager Sam Helliwell, has encouraged all Learn to Swim providers to utilise the new resources.

He said: “We are excited to launch these new resources to help improve the experience for both learners and teachers.

“Communication is key and we want to support swimming teachers in breaking down language barriers and also providing a new tool to help with different learning styles.

“I would encourage all swimming teachers and Learn to Swim providers to download the flash cards and there is also scope to translate the resources into more languages if required.”

Swim England’s Learn to Swim team are currently monitoring requests for additional languages with a view to producing more flash cards in the future.
