Jack Burnell named in all-English open water team for Worlds

Rio 2016 Olympian Jack Burnell has been named in a six-strong British Swimming team for the open water events at this summer’s World Championships in Hungary.

Burnell, who finished fifth at his second World Championships two years ago, will compete in the 10km event alongside Loughborough University teammate Caleb Hughes.

Danielle Huskisson will also head to her third Worlds while Alice Dearing, Tobias Robinson and Tim Shuttleworth complete an all-English squad.

  • Alice Dearing (Loughborough University)
  • Danielle Huskisson (University of Stirling)

And British Swimming Marathon Lead Bernie Dietzig was enthusiastic about the team’s strength in depth.

“It’s one of the biggest teams we’ve ever produced for a World Championships which is really encouraging,” said Dietzig.

“It’s also a strong team which has clear medal chances.

“The build up to selected for these athletes has been good. Off the back of a slow start to the season, with not many races available, we’ve just had an intense period of racing which has seen athletes compete in Abu Dhabi, USA and France.

“It’s exciting to see some new faces on the team such as Tobias and Tim. It will be a tough start to their international marathon careers but I’m pretty confident. They have a strong distance pedigree and I’m sure this will transfer to the marathon event.”

The team will finalise preparations in Setubal, Portugal on 24 June when they compete in a leg of the FINA Marathon World Cup.

The open water events of the World Championships will take place at Lake Balaton, Hungary.
