Fantastic coaching programme is set for one of its biggest years

A ‘fantastic coaching’ programme that aims to equip coaches with the necessary skills and knowledge to take their career to the next level is set for one of its biggest years.

The Swim England Senior Coach Programme is welcoming 46 learners onto the prestigious annual course.

Applications for this year’s programme were opened in June by the Institute of Swimming and the Swim England Talent Team went through the applications before choosing the successful candidates.

Lindsay Trimmings, Swim England Coach Development Manager, said:

“This year, we are excited to welcome 46 coaches onto the programme – one of our largest cohorts to date.

“The ongoing collaboration between the Swim England Talent Team and the Institute of Swimming has enabled us to create, what I believe is, a fantastic coaching programme.

“It will equip our coaches with the necessary skills and knowledge to support an individualised approach to coaching their swimmers.

“We have a fantastic group of experienced mentors to support the coaches throughout the year-long programme and we are looking forward to meeting the coaches to start this learning journey at the end of September.”

Building skills

The course will begin with a traditional welcome weekend which this year will take place online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Coaches will be assigned with a mentor who will support them through the programme.

The course will help build the skills needed to optimise the performance levels of aspiring athletes at junior and senior level.

It supports coaches and enables them to use current and innovative techniques to develop a holistic athlete development programme.

This, in turn will help improve performance and keep athletes committed and motivated, while aligning with the clear messages set out in the Swim England Talent Pathway and Optimal Athlete Development Framework.

As well as focusing on the coaching programme, senior coaches will also work more collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team to create an environment in which athletes thrive.

This will involve key external and internal partners, leisure service providers, the club committee, team managers plus various sport science and medicine practitioners.
