Starting out in aquatics, Ben embarks on the Swimming Lesson Helper CPD

swimming assistant BenSwimming is not just a sport; it’s a life skill that opens up a world of possibilities from a young age. Meet Ben, 15, a member of Beacon Swimming & Lifesaving Club. Eager to contribute to his swimming community, Ben recently completed the Institute of Swimming, Swimming Lesson Helper CPD to help build his confidence before assisting in teaching swimming!

At the age of 14, Ben completed the Swim England Youth Volunteering Programme and volunteered at his club and at swimming events, for part of his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Ben decided to complete the Swimming Lesson Helper course to help build his confidence prior to gaining work experience at a local swim school.

Ben said,

“The course was online learning and easy to complete it took a few hours and I could complete it in my own time. There is a practical section to complete by a swimming teacher which I can work through whilst gaining experience”

The Institute of Swimming Lesson Helper covers essential topics such as legal aspects, roles and responsibilities, fundamental movement skills, core aquatic skills, scientific principles of swimming, and the components of a lesson plan.

Upon completing the Institute of Swimming Lesson Helper course, Ben received a certificate of completion.

Ben continued,

“It was good to get a certificate too which I can then add to my CV and work experience portfolio.”

After completing the course Ben began assisting at a local swim school. The Institute of Swimming Lesson Helper course helped bolster his confidence when working with children.

Ben stated,

“It really helped me understand how to deal with children and how to address any issues that may arise. I now know when and how to report these matters to a Level 2 Swimming Teacher and feel much more ready to assist.

“I’ve really enjoyed gaining work experience and working with children, teaching them a valuable life skill is so rewarding. It really doesn’t feel like work as we have so much fun. I have already booked an Institute of Swimming Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) Course ready for when I turn 16. I really want to earn whilst I study for my A Levels and working as a swimming assistant is the perfect student job with hours that can fit around my studies.”
