This course covers the skills needed to effectively plan, deliver, and evaluate a series of open water training sessions.

Who is the course designed for?

Anyone who is a Swim England Coach, Swimming Teacher or Triathlon Coach and who wants to become an independent open water coach.

Course content

The course is delivered through a mixture of online learning, zoom classroom activities, and practical learning, in an open water environment.

You will learn about:

  • The roles and responsibilities of coaching open water swimming
  • The advantages and disadvantages of different types of equipment
  • The different opportunities available to open water swimmers
  • How to plan for open water coaching sessions
  • How to develop session management skills

Prerequisites

You must be:

  • 18 years of age or older on the first day of the course
  • have experience of open water swimming

You must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming (or ASA equivalent)
  • STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming
  • Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach
  • Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate
  • ASA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Swimming
  • 1st 4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Triathlon
  • RLSS Pool to Pond award

Training Format

Blended Learning

This course allows you to make the most of learning online and will cover the course theory through interactive e-learning and live zoom webinars. E-learning allows you to work through the content at your own pace while the zoom webinars will be with the rest of your course cohort and from the comfort of your own home. Once you get to the venue, you’ll have pool-based practical work, session delivery and assessment to complete.
