Initial Assessment for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) - SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment only route which you can take to gain the SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification if you already possess the skills and knowledge needed. You will be asked to provide relevant and sufficient evidence to show that you meet the criteria laid out in the qualification specification. To ensure RPL is for you please ensure you read all of the information below as no refunds are given on this programme.

This initial assessment should be completed prior to booking onto the SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming RPL programme. The cost of the initial assessment is £20 and should you be accepted onto the programme the cost will be £495. During the dates listed on the itinerary below you will be contacted by your assessor to arrange a suitable time to complete the initial assessment.

What Evidence will I need to submit?

As part of your RPL programme you will be required to submit the following evidence:

  • Theoretical based questions - There are 13 theoretical questions which you must answer correctly in order to be signed off by your assessor.
  • Lesson plans - You will be required to submit 6 x lesson plans and these need to cover the stages 1-7 of the Swim England learn to swim pathway. All 6 of these lesson plans need to meet the standard and be signed off by your assessor.
  • Overview of a series of lessons - You will be required to submit 2 x overview of a series of lessons and these need to cover the stages 1-7 of the Swim England learn to swim pathway. Both of these lesson plans need to meet the standard and be signed off by your assessor.
  • Observation record - You will be required to submit video evidence showing you assisting at least 6 x 30 minute swimming lessons covering stages 1-7 of the Swim England learn to swim pathway. It is your responsibility to identify which parts of each lesson meet the criteria laid out in the observation record.
  • Self Evaluation - You will be required to successfully complete seven sections reviewing various elements of your teaching.
  • Professional development plan - You will be required to successfully complete a professional development plan to determine two areas of professional development, how these will be achieved and what support you will need in order to achieve these.

RPL Format

If you pass the initial assessment you will be invited to book and pay for the full RPL programme and must be able to meet the following deadlines:

  • On the start date of the programme, you will be given access to your online assessment materials and you will have 4 weeks to submit all required evidence.
  • The assessment will consist of: completed theoretical questions, written work that is submitted via Google Classroom and the submission of video evidence. The video evidence will need to show you teaching so please make sure you have their permission before booking onto RPL.
  • Your assessor will then mark your work and provide feedback within 2 weeks.
  • Based on the feedback given you will then have 2 weeks to make any necessary amendments and resubmit your evidence to your assessor.
  • Your assessor will mark your resubmission within 1 week and confirm the results of your RPL programme.

Who is RPL designed for?

Anyone who already holds the SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification and already has experience teaching swimming lessons using the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme. You will be able to provide evidence of meeting the qualification specification. During the RPL programme, there is no tutor support or learning resources provided and you must be able to provide the necessary evidence without support.

Prerequisites

You must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course.

You must have one of the following qualifications:

An ASA Level 1 Award in Teaching Aquatics or an equivalent ASA qualification taken in or after 1994.
You will have experience of working as a swimming teacher and must have a good level of English, with both written and verbal communication skills.
