Daley and Reid seal National Cup title

Tom Daley and Grace Reid won gold in their first event of 2017, with Mixed 3m Synchro victory at the British National Cup in Plymouth.

The European champions, who train 414 miles apart in London and Edinburgh respectively, were in command through all five rounds.

They eventually finished on 260.91 ahead of Plymouth’s Kayleigh Sinclair and Aidan Heslop on 243.30.

Below-par efforts from Reid in the third and Daley in the fifth round of dives meant the pair fell well short of their 321.06 set to win the European title in London last May.

But Daley insisted the event was more about dusting off the cobwebs at the first competition of the year.

“It was fun out there today,” said Daley. “Diving with Grace is always a little bit different.

“It’s also different because I’m diving springboard while I usually dive from 10m.

“It’s my first competition back after the Olympics so it’s nice to be home here in Plymouth. And also it’s nice to come away with a gold.”

Toulson and Couch win 10m Synchro gold

World Series medallists Lois Toulson and Tonia Couch were also victorious on the opening day in Plymouth, topping the podium in the 10m Synchro.

The pair, who finished fifth at Rio 2016, showed glimpses of their class and would have sailed over the 300 point marker were it not for both dropping their final dive.

They ultimately finished on 294.24 with only rivals, City of Leeds’ Ruby Bower and Phoebe Banks, second on 264.60.

“That was our first competition of the year so we’ve got a lot more to give but at the same time I’m really pleased with that performance today,” said Couch.

“We’ve not done too much together since Rio. We’ve been focusing on getting our individual dives correct before putting them together.”

Toulson added: “I was a bit nervous. I didn’t think I would be, coming from my last event being the Olympics. It was good to get back into competition again after Rio.”
