England juniors secure double gold in Rijeka

The 2016 European Junior Diving Championships took place in Rijeka, Croatia last week and saw English divers secure double gold as well as podium finishes on every day of the five day event.

The first gold medal came on the penultimate day of the competition from Plymouth diver Victoria Vincent. She showed some terrific form in her Group B 10m Platform final, opening the first round with a Back 2 ½ Somersaults 1 ½ Twists Pike to score 60.80.

She finished the event on 338.30 for gold after her Inward 3 ½ Somersaults tucked received 72.00 points from the judges.

Vincent’s Plymouth teammate Matthew Dixon was the second English diver to take a gold medal for the British diving team, scoring a total of 492.25 to finish six points ahead of his Russian counterpart in the Boys’ Group A 10m Platform. He was joined on the podium by Dive London’s Noah Williams, who scored 476.95 for bronze.

On day three, City of Sheffield pair Millie Fowler and Millie Hafferty secured a 3m Synchro silver with their score of 250.65, less than a point behind first place.

Their penultimate dive, an impressive Back 2 ½ Somersaults Tucked, saw them awarded 59.64.

Sheffield teammate Owen Harrison also claimed an individual silver in the Boys B Platform, finishing with 416.20 after his final round of dives.

Plymouth’s Shanice Lobb was the third English diver to win silver, continuing from her second place finish in the prelims. She scored the highest individual dive score of 64.00 in the 10m Platform, taking the medal with 396.50.

The young squad also took a bronze medal in the team event, securing the first medal for GB on the opening day of the competition. Victoria Vincent, Sheffield’s Jordan Houlden and City of Leeds pair Kat Torrance and Matty Lee made it onto the podium with 302.40.
