Volunteers encouraged to dive into new role and sign up for free judging resource

Volunteers keen to dive into a new role are being encouraged to sign up for a free resource launched by Swim England.

The Introduction to Judging – Diving resource has been created in conjunction with the Diving Leadership Group and aims to teach the basics to those interested in becoming a judge.

It covers roles, events, scoring, types and position of dives, how to judge a dive and the numbers of each dive.

Sarah Barrow, Swim England Diving Development Officer, said: “The sports development team  have been looking at ways to encourage new technical officials which are a key part of the delivery of competitions in our sport.

“Although events aren’t currently taking place, this is the ideal time to sign up for the Introduction to Diving – Judge resource and take the first steps on the road to becoming a diving judge.

“We have listened to our judge presenters who have expressed an introduction would be hugely useful before attending a course.”

Developing your knowledge

Claire Coleman, Swim England Head of Volunteering and Pathways, said the online resource had no presenter so could be completed at the pace of those signing up to it.

She added: “As a national governing body, we recognise that parents want to be part of the sporting environment with their children – but we appreciate it can be a nerve-wracking experience to attend a judging course where you may not have participated in the discipline yourself.

“This free online resource is a great way to develop your knowledge of the discipline and consider taking the next step to becoming a fully qualified judge.

“It is a development that has been led by Sarah, also now appointed as Swim England Diving Leadership Group technical lead, who has worked with members of the Leadership Group to react to feedback we have received about recruiting and engaging volunteers.”
