Silver lining for Laugher as he bags second FINA Diving World Series 2020 medal

Jack Laugher said he was happy to double his FINA Diving World Series medal haul in Canada – despite not being pleased with his final dive.

After winning a silver in the Men’s 3m Synchronised alongside Dan Goodfellow on the opening day of the competition in Montreal, Laugher finished second again in the individual event.

He was in contention for the gold medal throughout the final and was only 3.65 points behind Philippe Gagne going into the last dive.

However, Laugher’s forward two-and-a-half somersaults with three twists in pike position earned him his lowest score of the final – 52.65 points – and Gagne took full advantage to win his first ever FINA Diving World Series title.

Gagne’s final dive was applauded by Laugher, who finished on a tally of 431.05 points – 40.25 behind the 22-year-old Canadian, who had previously never won an individual World Series medal.

Despite the disappointment of the last dive, Laugher was looking at the positives having made a better start to this year’s FINA Diving World Series compared with the 2019 competition.

Last year, he started off with two bronze medals yet still went on to top the rankings in the Men’s 3m Springboard.

But he knows he will have to be on the top go his game if he is to repeat that achievement.

The City of Leeds diver said: “I wasn’t pleased with my last dive, but I’m happy to get a medal here.

“Last season I started off the World Series with two bronze medals and still ended up at the top of the 2019 rankings in 3m springboard.

“There’s work to be done and I’m happy to do it.”

In the Women’s 10m Platform, Lois Toulson climbed from last position to finish in fourth place with her final dive.

She was only 8.65 points off a podium place in the end after scoring a total of 328.90.

Malaysia’s Pandelela Pamg was the bronze medallist on 337.55 – 17.55 adrift of Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito, who took gold with a score of 355.10.
