Team GB divers just miss out on medals on day one of European Championships

Great Britain’s divers finished just outside the medals during the mixed team event on the opening day of the 2021 European Aquatics Championships.

Ross Haslam, Yasmin Harper, Noah Williams and Eden Cheng were trailing last at the halfway stage but an impressive recovery in the second half of the competition saw them take fourth spot.

The quartet amassed 383.40 points to finish 1.40 clear of the fifth-placed Ukranian team, with Russia taking the gold medal with a total of 431.80.

Each team had to perform total of six dives – three from the 3m springboard comprising of one man, one woman and one synchro and the same from the 10m platform.

Williams produced the standout dive for Britain as his armstand back two somersaults with two-and-a-half twists earned an impressive 86.40 points to catapult the team up the leaderboard.

Cheng also weighed in with a quality back two-and-a-half somersaults with one-and-a-half twists pike to add 73.60 to the British tally.
Italy took the silver medal with a score of 428.00, while Germany were third on 421.00 points.

The second day of the competition sees Williams team up with Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix in the mixed 10m Synchro, while Harper and Kat Torrance compete in the women’s 1m Springboard.
