‘It's amazing’ ... Wright and Wicherek grab gold in 1m Synchro Springboard

Amy Wright and Hanna Wicherek said they felt ‘amazing’ after claiming the first gold medal of the Swim England Diving National Age Group Championships.

The Burnley Bobcats and City of Leeds Diving Club pair topped the podium in the Girls 8-13 years 1m Synchro at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Pool.

Their score of 145.17 was 1.65 clear of the Crystal Palace Diving Club duo of Olivia Alderton and Kitty Smith, who took the silver medal on 143.52.

Lyra Guide Tucker and Baye Cooke-Mcdonald, from Star Diving Club and Luton Diving Club, took the bronze medal with a total of 142.26.

Wright and Wicherek said: “We’re really happy – out of this world.

“It’s amazing and we’re looking forward to competing in the individual events later in the competition.”

Their delighted coach, Harriet Jones, added: “I’m really proud – they did really well.

“They did some lovely drills in an amazing competition routine and pulled it out of the bag.”

Wright and Wicherek saved their best until last to take the top spot.

They were third going into their fourth and final dive but their inward one-and-a-half somersault tuck scored them 37.62 as they grabbed the gold.

Alderton and Smith had led after their first dive, which earned them an impressive total of 43.20, but they had dropped to fifth place by the end of round three.

However, their forward two-and-a-half somersault in tuck position earned a total of 36.72 as they took the silver medal.
