City of Liverpool win continental prize with EU Nations Club Cup victory

City of Liverpool boosted their early season momentum with victory in the EU Nations Club Cup in Prague.

The North West side won all five of their games at the continental tournament in the Czech Republic to lift the title.

Liverpool defeated last season’s winners, German side Chemnitz, as well as domestic rivals City of Coventry en route to gold.

The English side finished at least five goals clear in all of their games, and only lost one quarter of play throughout the weekend with Kate Read named goalkeeper of the tournament.

“We were delighted to be invited to compete in the EU Nations Club Cup and received warm hospitality from the Czech Federation,” said head coach Joanne Mountfield.

“The development tournament was ideal preparation for the new season and was a great opportunity to make contacts with other European clubs.”

Liverpool build on victory from opening round of BWPL

The club’s British Water Polo League outfit Liverpool Lizards had kicked off their season with a win and a loss in the opening round of matches the previous weekend.

And the Liverpool players looked sharp as they defeated Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade 13-8 in their first match in Prague.

After a comfortable 14-5 victory against Swedish side Jarfalla, Liverpool secured their second 13-8 win of the tournament against last year’s winners Chemnitz.

The Liverpool defence picked up three shut-outs from four quarters in a 12-2 defeat of Coventry, before the club wrapped up the tournament with a 13-5 defeat of Czech team Stepp Praha.

“After starting our BWPL campaign the previous weekend, and introducing several new players into the squad, we were excited for the opportunity for the test ourselves against other European Club sides,” said team captain Laura Hesketh.

“The team worked well together, giving each other support when needed. Five out of five wins in three days is great and we hope we can build on these results back home and retain the title for the fourth consecutive time.”
