Player Development with Swim England Water Polo

Swim England Water Polo is committed to delivering high-quality training and competition opportunities for the most promising young players across England. Supported by dedicated volunteers and strong partnerships with external stakeholders, our programme provides a clear and structured pathway designed to help every athlete realise their full potential.

Our overarching aim is to support the long-term development of athletes, preparing them to progress into senior international squads. We focus on developing the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological attributes essential for success at the highest level of the sport.

The development Pathway

Regional Programme

Across England, many Swim England regions deliver development programmes for their top age-group male and female players. These programmes culminate in Inter-Regional Competitions, although delivery and competition structures may vary between regions as they operate autonomously.

Within the Regional programmes, players work towards meeting the England Water Polo Talent Centre Standards. Regional Head Coaches assess athletes against these criteria and nominate those ready to progress to the next stage of the pathway.

The Inter-Regional Championships and Talent Centre Games also serve as key talent identification opportunities, allowing national coaches to ensure no promising athlete is overlooked.

National Talent Centre Programme

The National Talent Centre Programme comprises six geographically located centres across England, providing ambitious young players with regular, high-quality coaching in an accessible environment.

Players are selected through open trials. Once selected, athletes receive structured coaching across three terms annually, focusing on the technical skills and tactical foundations required for progression to national team and international level play.

During the winter term, players take part in a unique competition format, where mixed teams - comprising players from different centres - compete together. This format encourages collaboration and exposes athletes to a wider network of peers. The U14 tournament is delivered in partnership with the English Schools’ Swimming Association (ESSA), while the U16 festival is organised by Talent Centre coaches.

Following the Easter and summer terms, all six centres compete in the Talent Games. This flagship event offers athletes the opportunity to perform at the highest level for their age group in England. It also includes both pool-based sessions and classroom workshops led by expert practitioners.

National Squad Programme

The National Squad Programme represents the highest level of the England Water Polo pathway. U18, U20, and Senior squads train regularly throughout the year, preparing to compete in European and international competitions.

National Squad Selection

Following progression from the Talent Centre Programme (and typically two seasons prior to major age-group competitions) Great Britain age-group squads are formed.

Trials are open to British citizens and British passport holders. Players are usually nominated by their Talent Centre, Region, or Home Nation coach. Swim England will then contact nominated athletes to confirm trial participation and gather the required information.

In exceptional circumstances, players outside the established pathway may be considered, including those without recent regional or Talent Centre involvement or those currently obtaining British citizenship. Swim England also reserves the right to nominate players competing abroad where appropriate, such as those competing abroad.

Selected athletes are expected to demonstrate full commitment to the programme and engage in all required activities.

The trial process evaluates a range of performance areas. While not exhaustive, the following core elements guide selection decisions, alongside the Head Coach’s discretion in building a balanced and competitive squad:

• Player Characteristics: Drive, resilience, coachability, teamwork, commitment, ownership, and long-term development potential.

• Swimming Ability: 400m swim performance contributes to the overall assessment.

• Technical Skills: Including eggbeater efficiency, mobility, movement without the ball, passing, shooting (outfield players), and goalkeeping techniques such as shot-stopping and distribution.

• Game Understanding: Decision-making in attack and defence, technical execution under pressure, positional awareness, communication, and tactical understanding.

Athletes selected for national squads will be subject to continuous performance monitoring and development, supported by Swim England and a dedicated volunteer coaching team. Regular feedback is provided to support individual progression programmes in the pool and on land. This is delivered in partnership with the Swim England Sports Science and Sports Medicine team and the University of Birmingham.

Players remain an integral part of their home club environments, continuing to train with their clubs and regional programmes. Close collaboration with club coaches is essential to ensure athletes meet the training expectations required at national level.

All national squad training commitments delivered through camps and weekend sessions are compulsory and form a vital part of the athlete’s development journey.
