New training opportunity launched in national diving judge course

Swim England is excited to launch a new training opportunity for volunteers and members which will see them progressing in their journey of becoming a diving judge.

The recognised national governing body has placed considerable emphasis on delivering various training opportunities throughout the duration of the pandemic, and is excited to deliver the National Diving J1 Course in conjunction with the Swim England Diving Leadership Group.

This course is aimed at any Swim England members who wish to gain an initial understanding of Diving FINA Rules and apply this within their club and regional events organised by the region.

The course will be held virtually on Tuesday 6 April at 6.30 pm. It will enable participants to develop their knowledge of judging in diving and build on the basics they will have learned from completing the Introduction to Diving Judging resource which participants are encouraged to complete prior to attending.

This development work has been led by Sarah Barrow, a former Olympic diver, current FINA diving judge, and the technical officials lead for the Swim England Diving Leadership Group.

Sarah will deliver the first course to bring a mix of international experience and knowledge to volunteers who are starting on their judging journey.

She said: “Technical officials and judges make up a key part of our sport and are integral to competition.

“Now that a return to competition is on the horizon, Swim England is encouraging our members and volunteers who may be interested in becoming diving judges to take this opportunity and utilise this qualification within their club and regional competitive environments.”

Anyone booking onto the Diving Judge level 1 course will need to have completed the Introduction to Diving Judging resource which was launched last year after listening to our judge presenters, who expressed how an introductory resource would be beneficial before undertaking the J1 course.

Lottie Thompson, chair of the Swim England Diving Leadership Group said: “We fully recognise the importance of our judges to the competition pathway. And as we begin to go back into the water the group is focused on supporting club and volunteering development. We are really excited to have Sarah on board to lead this work.”

The course is open to current Swim England members aged 16 and over who have completed the Introduction to Diving Judging resource. If you are not a member please contact your affiliated Swim England club. You can register for the course by clicking here.

Once the course is fully booked, you can still register your interest here. You can view more information about the diving training and development judge pathway here.
