Hodgson closes British Masters with seventh individual gold

Mike Hodgson brought the curtain down on a spectacular British Masters Championships with another two European records.

The Guildford City swimmer has been one of the stars of the meet, winning six individual golds in the 50-54 Years age group and breaking records in four of them.

And Hodgson carried his form into the eighth and final session in Aberdeen.

He kicked off the session with his Guildford mixed 4x100m Medley Relay teammates, as they lowered the European record for the 200-239 Years age group.

Hodgson, Lynda Coggins, David Bryant and Michelle Ware swam 4:37.77, breaking the old British marker of 4:48.05 from six years ago.

The 50-year old returned to the pool one last time for the men’s 50m Butterfly, setting a European record 26.57 for his seventh individual gold of the Championships.

The British record was broken in the same age group for the women’s 50m Fly as Flitwick’s Liz Woolner took the time down to 30.72.

There were also British records for Trafford Metro swimmer Alec Johnson, who set a British record 27.65 in the 55-59 Years age group, and Truro City’s Graeme Milne, who clocked a national record of 29.64 in the 60-64 Years age group.

London Otter and Rachael Keir claim final session records

London Otter were the other team to break a relay record in the final session as they won gold in the 100-119 Years age group.

Wade Rimbach, Craig Gillespie, Abigail Hucker and Catherine Demont took the British record down to 4:30.14.

The final record of the meet came to one of Aberdeen’s own swimmers, Rachael Keir of Silver City Blues.

As well as winning gold in the 30-34 Years 800m Freestyle by nearly 30 seconds, Keir took the British record down to 9:28.62 – a drop of more than seven seconds on Sarah Collings’ 9:36.32 from 2012.
