Trafford Metro win Otter 150 Cup at Masters National Championships 2022

Trafford Metro were crowned as the top club on the final day of the Swim England National Masters 2022, and were presented with the Otter 150 Cup.

The club broke a total of 13 records throughout the three days of competition at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge.

To make up that total, it was one world record, three European records and nine British records.

Club chairperson and part of the coaching team at Trafford Metro, Bob Bolton, said that the team are ‘a joy and an honour to coach’.

He said: “12 months ago I made it quite clear that I really wanted to do well in this competition, because we did alright last year and I was really chuffed with that.

“So I said right, let’s target this as a possibility that we could win it, because it’s going to encourage everybody to train hard and it’s going to encourage them to train more regular, it will give us more of a focus, and you never know we might just do it – and here we are today.

“I’m absolutely overjoyed for the swimmers because it’s just the ultimate thing to win as a team, it doesn’t get better than that really.

“Sadly, we had to delay the presentation so we could watch our last few swimmers. And it was well worth watching because we picked up another gold in the 100m Free with a fantastic swim.

“It’s just been a fantastic weekend. It doesn’t get any better.

“I would like to say a big thank you to my wife, Jo, who is also one of the masters coaches, and to our club head coach, Craig Ward, we couldn’t do it without them.

“And there’s a whole raft of helpers within the club. The likes of Med Barton, who’s put together the relay teams with Richard Simmons, Craig and myself.”

“We are just one big team, one big happy family.”

“The performances have been phenomenal.

“Just to see those swimmers come out of that pool and they have obviously left everything in the pool, they’ve given everything they can.

“It’s an individual sport swimming but it’s a team sport as well when you come to events like this and when you see the relays.

“There was a lot of swimmers who took one for the team because they could probably have squeezed slightly better times out in their individual races if we hadn’t put them in so many teams, so I’m very grateful to them all for turning out and doing what they could for the team.

“And to those who missed out this weekend because of illness and injury, you are still part of a fantastic team and we look forward to seeing you back here at the next competition.”

More records fall in final session

The final session of the competition saw two European records broken, one equalled and a further six British records broken.

Woking got the success started, knocking 0.60 off the previous European best time in the 200+ Mixed 4x50m Medley Team event.

Their team of Michelle Ware, David Bryant, Michael Hodgson and Jennie Clarke finished in 1:59.00.

The other new European benchmark was set by South Downs Trojan Swimming Club’s Jo Corben in the 50-54 Years Women’s 200m Backstroke.

Corben touched the wall in a time of 2:26.17 to lower the record by 0.68.

In the 60-64 Years age group of the same event, Harrogate’s Julie Hoyle matched the European record time of 2:40.12 with her superb swim.

Trafford Metro’s quartet of Rachel Barton, Neville Barton, Judy Brown and Neil Mackinnon finished in 2:30.57 to break the British record in the 280+ Mixed 4x50m Medley Team.

Shortly after, Birmingham Masters clocked in at a new GB record time of 3:10.42 in the 320+ age group thanks to Arthur Lowe, Keith Ingram, Judy Wilson and Pauline Cooke.

Tom Barden of Loughborough University was the stand out in the Men’s 18-24 Years 200m Backstroke after he took more than a second off the previous British best with his 1:56.51.

Wellingborough’s Steve Grossman (11:17.41), Barnet Copthall’s Fleur Lewis (8:32.98) and Trafford Metro’s Daniel Mills (8:27.59) all set new British records for their respective age groups in the 800m Freestyle.
