Nineteen new records round off day two at the Masters Nationals

Two world, 10 European and seven British records were added to the ever growing tally of broken records at the 2022 Swim England Masters National Championships in Sheffield.

In the third and final session of day two Spencer Swim Team rounded off the day’s events with a new world record in the Women’s 280+ Years 4x100m Medley Team following on from an earlier world’s best time from Helen Gorman.

Spencer’s quartet of Helen Trippe, Amanda Heath, Esther Iseppi and Diane Ford narrowly broke the record time after a splendid display from the four women.

Their time of 6:12.17 took just 0.27 off the previous best time as the team wrote their name into the record books.

Elsewhere in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Team event Trafford Metro set a new European best in the 240+ Years.

Rachel Barton, Geraldine Bolton, Judy Brown and Helen Sadler put in a sensational performance as they knocked more than 15 seconds off the previous best.

They set a time of 5:18.65 compared to the former European record of 5:36.12.

Gorman breaks world record

City of Cardiff’s Helen Gorman broke the world record in the Women’s 50-54 Years 200m Breaststroke, setting a scintillating time of a 2:41.45.

Gorman has already broken two British records in Sheffield throughout the opening two days went on to beat that effort by bettering the world’s best time by just more than a second.

There were two other records in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke with the first going to Spencer Swim Team’s Amanda Heath.

She set the new European benchmark with a 3:10.83 in the 65-69 Years event as she added yet another record to her arsenal.

The final record in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke came from Team England’s Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games star Imogen Clark.

She set the new top Masters time in 18-24 Years with a 2:28.43.

On the men’s side of the 200m Breaststroke there was yet another British record set.

Barry O’Brien’s swim of 2:55.49 gave him the new record time in the Men’s 65-69 Years event.

Two European records kick off the session

The final session on day two got off to enthralling start as two European records were broken in the opening event, the Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Team.

The 280+ Years quartet from Trafford Metro took the first of these record after setting an impressive time of a 2:12.77.

Making up the team was Neil Mackinnon, Rachel Barton, Judy Brown and Neville Brown to beat the previous best European time by 1.55.

In the 320+ Years it was Birmingham Masters who broke the continental best time.

Arthur Lowe, Pauline Cooke, John Tennant and Judy Wilson made up the team that finished in 2:43.90 to knock almost ten seconds off the record.

Men’s Medley produces five new records

Five records were set in the Men’s 4x100m Medley Team event with three of them being European’s.

Warrington Masters set the new European best in the 200+ Years with their team of Christopher Rix, Russell Mason, Ben Harkin and Spencer Glover setting a 4:13.39 to take more than two seconds off the record.

Birmingham Masters’ (320+ Years) quartet of Arthur Lowe, Keith Ingram, Trevor Clark and John Tennant set a 6:57.10 as they became the first team in the category to go under seven minutes in Europe.

The third European record in the event went to East Leeds’ 120+ Years team who finished in 3:47.57 as their squad made up of Samuel Lawman, Richard Ayre, Alistair Crawford, Jeffrey Lo knocked two seconds off the European best time with a 3:47.57.

Two British records were also in the event with Trafford Metro’s Alec Johnson, Frederick Bolton, Richard Symons and Neville Barton touching the wall in 4:53.55 to set the British best 240+ Years’ time.

Loughborough University’s young 72+ Years team then impressed to set a British Masters record with a time of 3:41.61 which was 1.37 quicker than the record time.

Tom Barden, David Bloomfield, Alex Bregazzi and Michael Ripper teamed up to the set the time.

Records tumble in 50m Freestyle

Six records fell in the 50m Freestyle events as a number of swimmers sprinted their way to personal best times.

Three of those records were European ones with David Emerson, Michael Hodgson and Alyson Fordham all setting record breaking times.

Woking swimmer Michael Hodgson continued his fine meet with the European record in the 55-59 Years Men’s event.

Hodgson set a time of 24.90 that gave him his third European Masters best for the meet as he became the first European to go under the 25 second mark.

He beat the previous record of 25.17 by 0.27.

Emerson is another swimmer who’s on top form after he added to his two British records as part of East Leeds’ relay teams to set a European record time in the Men’s 60-64 Years category.

His time of a 25.75 saw him go under the record time in the sprint by 0.26.

On the Women’s side of the 50m Freestyle it was Bishop Stortford swimmer Fordham who became a European record holder.

In the Women’s 65-69 Years race she dashed to the wall in 30.33 in a sensational display.

Adding to the European success was three British records in the 50m Freestyle.

Harriet Rodgers of Loughborough University set a 25.27 as she set the fastest time in the Women’s 18-24 Years event.

Another East Leeds swimmer in Paul Clemence also edged himself into the record books.

Clemence set a 23.95 which became the new British best time in the Men’s 50-54 Years as he added to his world record he set as part of East Leeds’ 160+ Years Men’s 4x50m Freestyle Team on the opening day.
