Brilliant Basingstoke celebrate another world record in opening session of day two

It was a brilliant start to day two of the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships for Basingstoke, who doubled up on world records.

After setting a new world best time in the 160+ Years Female 4x100m Freestyle Team event on day one, the same fantastic foursome of Fleur Turner, Alex O’Kelly, Sarah Hunt, and Elizabeth Godfrey were world beaters yet again.

This time, their success came in the 160+ Years Female 4x200m Freestyle Team with a time of 8:54.33, which knocked two seconds off the previous best.

Turner also set a new 200m Freestyle British record of 2:12.43 in the 45-49 Years age group for her part in the relay victory.

The Basingstoke team were the only record breakers in their event, but the session overall saw an additional 10 British records broken.

Dartmoor clock first record of day two

Dartmoor kicked off the action with another British record in the 100+ Years Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay.

The quartet of Dolly Trigg, Sonny Trigg, Regan Lloyd and Lauren Quigley swam an impressive 3:42.07 to break the British record.

The time to beat was 3:42.99, swam by the GB Police team back in 2011, meaning no group has gone near this time in more than 12 years.

Cross continued Dartmoor success

There was a hat-trick of new British records in the Open/Male 50m Backstroke, with Dartmoor continuing their strong start.

It was Daniel Cross who doubled Dartmoor’s tally barely an hour after their first. The 26-year-old touched the wall in 25.23 – bettering the previous time in the 25-29 Years age group by just two hundredths of a second.

Warrington’s Ben Harkin powered home in the 45-49 Years age group, as he put himself more than a second in front of the old British time (27.32) as he swam a 26.29.

And Steve Grossman of Wellingborough slipped under the 35 second mark with a time of 34.57 in the 70-74 Years age group to beat his own record.

Hodgson in fine form

The third event of day two, the 200m Individual Medley, saw four records broken.

Michael Hodgson put on a stellar performance on the opening day and showed no signs of slowing down as he broke yet another British record.

The 56-year-old Woking swimmer recorded a solid 2:19.72, which was almost two seconds ahead of the previous best time (2:21.82).

The next to jump on board the record-breaking wagon was Portsmouth’s Chris Jones. His solid performance meant he did enough to beat the previous record.

The time stood at 2:09.77 and was a tough one to beat, however, Jones swam a time of 2:09.42 to be crowned British champion in the 40-44 Years age group.

The third and final record in the Open/Male 200m Individual Medley came thanks to Mark Reynolds, who swims out of Barnet.

The 64-year-old swam a very fast 2:24.91, blasting the old time out of the water and giving him the British record title.

In the female event, there was a new British record for Aylesbury’s Elizabeth Gray, swimming in the 25-29 age group.

Gray set an incredible time of 2:21.06, with a 1:05.46 100m split. She managed to knock more than a second off the original time (2:22.30).

Lloyd leads the way in relay win

After already grabbing two records in the opening session of day two, Dartmoor weren’t finished there.

Regan Lloyd, Jack Piercing, Sonny Trigg and Kieran Preston teamed up in the penultimate event of the session to clock in at 7:45.53 in the 100+ Years Open/Male 4x200m Freestyle Relay.

They lowered the record by more than 12 seconds to set a new British best.

In a race that was all about the team, Lloyd was still able to clinch a new British record of his own. His split time of 1:40.53 improved the 25-29 Years Open/Male 200m Freestyle record.
