Help us to shape the future values and vision of Swim England at our roadshows

Spencer Swim Team superstar Diane Ford steals the show with new world record

Spencer’s Diane Ford was the only world record-breaking swimmer in the second session of day two at the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships 2023.

Now competing in the 80-84 Years age group, Ford knocked 0.79 off the previous record, which had been standing since 2016.

Her time of 3:53.56 saw her set a new world best time and clinch the gold medal in the Female 200m Breaststroke.

Despite no further world records, four European records were sent tumbling during the same session.

Woking’s work pays off

The first of the new European records was set by Michelle Ware, David Bryant, Michael Hodgson and Jennie Clarke of Woking.

The team were victorious in the 200+ Years Mixed 4x50m Medley Team event and were the only quartet in their age group to go under the two minute mark.

An impressive performance saw them set the new record time at 1:58.12. Alongside that was a personal triumph for Ware, who set a new British record of 31.36 in the 50-54 Years Female 50m Backstroke.

A further three British records also fell during this event, with Derby Excel clocking in at 1:44.54 in the 72+ Years age group thanks to Ethan Lawton, Imogen Clark, Georgina Pryor and Liam Dawson.

Dartmoor were back amongst the British records after Lauren Quigley, Kieran Preston, Sonny Trigg and Dolly Trigg teamed up to finish in 1:49.58 in the 100+ Years age group.

The 240+ age group saw Judy Brown, Peter Wilmot, Helen Sadler and Neil Mackinnon of Trafford Metro set a new British record (2:11.70).

Casson cruises to victory

Carnforth’s Sophie Casson cruised to the win in the 35-39 Years Female 200m Backstroke.

The 38-year-old touched the wall in a new European best time of 2:17.11.

Joining Casson in the record books in the 200m Backstroke were Trafford Metro duo Rachel Barton and Alec Johnson – both achieving new British records.

Barton set a time of 3:30.38 in the 75-79 Years age group, while Johnson put on a fantastic display in the 60-64 Years Open/Male 200m Backstroke to touch home in 2:30.56.

Double European Breaststroke bests

Both Mark Reynolds and Alyson Fordham are new European record holders after their respective performances in the 100m Freestyle.

Reynolds added to his British record he set earlier in the day with success in the 60-64 Years Open/Male 100m Freestyle event.

The Barnet swimmer clocked in at 56.72 to lower the record by 0.23.

Fordham knocked almost a full second off the previous European best in the Female 65-69 age group.

The time to beat was 1:08.00, but the 67-year-old managed a time of 1:07.07 to make the gold medal win extra special.

And not long after playing their part in their team’s European success, Woking’s Hodgson and Ware set new British records in their freestyle events.

Hodgson set a time of 55.70 in the 55-59 Years age group and Ware finished in 1:00.93 in the 50-54 Years Female event.

Rounding out the six new freestyle records were Gloucester’s Colin Stephenson who swam a 1:00.90 in the 65-69 Open/Male event and Basingstoke’s Fleur Turner with 1:00.13 in the Female 45-49 Years event.

Ian was Swift to the finish in the penultimate event

City of Sheffield’s Ian Swift and Portsmouth swimmer Chris Jones were cheered on from their teammates as they set new British best times in the Open/Male 200m Breaststroke.

Jones looked comfortable as he lowered the British record to 2:26.42 in the 40-44 Years age group, while Swift finished two seconds faster that his closest 50-54 Years competitor with a time of 2:27.06.
