New date set for FINA Aquatics World Masters Championships

The 2021 FINA Aquatics World Masters Championships has been pushed back almost 12 months.

It was due to be held next year on the island of Kyushu, Japan, from 3-12 August.

But with the 2020 Olympic Games being rearranged due to the coronavirus crisis, the 2021 FINA Aquatics World Championships has also been rescheduled.

The Tokyo Olympic Games will now be held between 23 July and 8 August 2021 – which clashed with the 2021 FINA Aquatics World Championships.

Some clarity in planning

These will now take place from 13 to 29 May 2022, with the Masters version running from 31 May to 9 June.

Dr Julio C. Maglione, FINA President, said: “After liaising with the relevant stakeholders and receiving feedback from them, we have no doubt that the decision taken will provide the best possible conditions for all participants at the Championships.

“At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, FINA hopes the announcement of these dates will allow for some clarity in planning for all concerned.”

It means the FINA Aquatics World Championships will now take place two months before the 2022 Commonwealth Games begins in Birmingham.
