Double trouble as Otter make two finals

London Otter and City of Manchester U19 girls bested their rivals at the ASA National Age Group Water Polo Championships 2017 at  Liverpool Aquatics Centre on Saturday 1 April.

London Otter were then out in force again in the U17 Girls’ semi-finals, beating Tyldesley to make their way into the finals. Last year’s Plate champions City of Liverpool won their match, so also have a shot at reclaiming the title tomorrow.

Manchester rain down on Hucknall in U19 semis

In the first U19 Girls’ semi-final match, City of Manchester played Hucknall. They finished top of their group in the qualifiers, so came out with confidence and sailed to a 16-1 victory.

Stephanie Whittaker was the top scorer for the Manchester side, scoring two goals in three out of four quarters. She slammed home the final goal of the match with 2:40 left to play. Hucknall’s only goal came in the first quarter, after which the team succumbed to Manchester’s relentless attacks.

The next match in the U19 Girls’ semi-final saw last year’s champions London Otter take on City of Liverpool. These were the same teams in the 2016 U19 Girls final, in which Otter managed to take the win.

It was a hotly contested match, with the score sitting 7-7 at the end of the third quarter. Each goal scored by the London side was returned by their rivals.

Otter took the lead at the halfway point of the final quarter, and despite a goal from Liverpool with 47 seconds on the clock, Otter took victory, 11-10.

Otter make second final after U17 win

London Otter stormed their way to a second victory, this time thanks to their U17 squad. They beat Tyldesley 18-3 in the first U17 semi final of the day. Katie Cutler was the top goalscorer, hitting the back of the net four times for the London side.

Otter now have their sights firmly set on taking both titles in tomorrow’s finals, when they will look to claim the U17 and U19 double for the first time in their history.

The second semi in the Girls’ U17 competition was another hard fought match. City of Liverpool took on Newton Abbot for the third time in three weeks, but this time in front of a home crowd.

In another close game, Liverpool managed to hold a lead for most of the match. Molly Boniface-Ashton was an unstoppable force in front of goal, securing eight goals. Liverpool will now face London Otter in tomorrow’s finals after a 13-12 victory today.
