England intending to host ‘thrilling’ 10-day water polo tournament in 2022

England is intending to host a 10-day water polo tournament in 2022 featuring teams from across the Commonwealth.

Approaches have been made to potential partners to put together a viable tournament – to be held between 25 November and 4 December 2022 – and confirm logistics and the event format, including a water polo legacy programme.

The date identified is the best fit to the international calendar.

Ian Elliot, event chair, said: “Hosting an event of this nature, particularly with the uncertainties of a global pandemic, is always going to be a challenge.

“Feasibility studies and initial planning is promising but not concluded.

Exciting times

“Further updates will follow early next year.”

Jane Nickerson, Swim England chief executive, said: “Water polo is one of our core sports and we are aiming to deliver the tournament next year.

“It should be a thrilling competition and we hope to welcome international teams to England in 2022.”

Toby King, chair of the Swim England Water Polo Leadership Group, said: “This is a really exciting time for water polo to benefit from the interest created from the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in 2022.

“As part of our wider water polo strategy, we continue to work on increasing the visibility of water polo and on building the numbers of participants at all levels in this wonderful sport”
