Casson and Wills win 400m Freestyle golds in Budapest

Sophie Casson and Emma Wills brought the curtain down on their 2017 World Masters Championships campaigns with golds in the 400m Freestyle.

Both swimmers had already won the 200m and 800m Free titles for their respective age groups. And the pair completed hat-tricks of freestyle victories with impressive performances.

Victory for Casson in the 30-34 Yrs age group saw her win her fourth gold of the meet, having also picked up the 200m Backstroke crown in Hungary.

The Carnforth and District Otters swimmer took down her own European record to take the touch, winning in 4:22.91.

Another Brit, Rachael Keir, joined Casson on the podium with silver in 4:31.20.

Wills wins gold with 10 seconds in hand

Meanwhile, York City Baths’ Wills had more than 10 seconds in hand on the field in the 35-39 Yrs age group.

Wills took exactly eight seconds off her time set for silver at last year’s European Championships, claiming the World Championship title in 4:40.17.

Newcastle Swim Team’s William Jolly was the only other British silver medallist in the 400m Free.

Competing in the youngest 25-29 Yrs age group, Jolly swam a 4:15.31 effort for the second spot on the podium

There was also a British medal in the women’s 25-29 Yrs as Maidenhead swimmer Becky O’Brien took bronze in 4:39.86.

Having won 200m Fly gold 24 hours earlier, Holywell’s Nicola Latty returned for bronze in the 45-49 Yrs 400m Free, touching in 4:52.79.

Sue Haigh sets British record for bronze

There were also bronze medals for Anne Bourne, Sue Haigh and Doreen Gordon.

Camp Hill Edwardians swimmer Bourne clocked 5:41.28 in the 60-64 Yrs age group.

Tiverton’s Haigh was home in a British record 5:47.18 in the 65-69 Yrs event while Southport swimmer Gordon stopped the clock on 7:37.66 in the 75-79 Yrs.
