Asher and Hodgson on top in British Masters Decathlon 2016

Once again Jane Asher of Kings Cormorants took first place in the ladies’ event with a whopping 10708 points, now retaining her title for the past five years.

Judith Hattle (Carlisle Aquatics) finished in second place, having finished in the top three every year since 2010.

Rachel Keir (Silver City) finished third, just ahead of East Leeds backstroke legend Julie Hoyle.

Dave Warren and Mike Hodgson once again battled it out for top honours in the men’s event, with Mike reversing last year’s result, just edging first place with 7037 points.

Sprint specialist Paul Clemence, improved one place on his 2015 finish, claiming third spot ahead of training partner Ben Harkin.

East Leeds Masters had a strong representation in the 2016 Decathlon. As in 2015 they almost managed top team in both men’s and women’s events but were pipped to the post by defending champions Silver City Blues, with their strong women’s team of Rachael Keir, Audrey Cooper, June Falconer and Laura Robertson.

East Leeds team

East Leeds men’s team of Paul Clemence, Alistair Crawford, Kyran Parker and Richard Jagger, had to work hard to defend their 2015 title, with the winner decided at the final swimming competition of the year.

With Totnes and East Leeds both competing in the South Yorkshire Masters the lead swapped on a swim by swim basis. East Leeds were the eventual winners by a nail-biting 71 points. The Totnes team comprising of father and sons Simon, Kalon and Levin Veale, and Daniel John, had topped the table for much of the year.

The awards this year are £100 for first place, £50 for second place, £25 for third place and a cap for everyone in the individual top ten.

The men’s and women’s club who come first will also receive £400 for their club and a hat each.

For those Masters swimmers who may not know about the decathlon competition, you are automatically entered if you swim in an event where the results are sent to ‘Masters Rankings’.
