East Leeds ease to World relay record at Ponds Forge

The closing session of the ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships 2015 at Ponds Forge in Sheffield saw East Leeds’ Men’s 120+ 4x50m Freestyle Relay team claim a world record.

The four man team from East Leeds of Paul Clemence, Joshua Spencer, Chris Knee and Alistair Crawford swam almost six seconds ahead of second place, touching 1:32.39 for the gold.

The three of us train together on a daily basis so that makes this world record all the more special.

Team captain, Paul Clemence, commented on the team performance: “It feels fantastic to break a World record, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“We all swim together regularly, we’re all Leeds boys, three of us train together on a daily basis, so that makes it all the more special.

“We never have any expectations we just come to the event and try and do the best race we can.”

Judith Hattle of Carlisle Aquatics took a European record in the Women’s 55/59yrs 200m Butterfly, swimming 2:42.04, over 40 seconds faster than her two rivals, also setting a British record in the process.

There were more British records in the 200m Fly, two of which were in the women’s events and two from the men’s. Kevin Smith of Newcastle took the 50/54yrs age group record in a time of 2:24.11, and Derek Parr of Otter took the 70/74yrs age group with 3:05.05.
