East Midlands Masters Challenge Gala

Sue Arrowsmith, Swim England’s regional representative for masters swimming in the East Midlands, tells us about the exciting gala held in their region each year.

The East Midlands Challenge Masters Gala was this year hosted by Lincolnshire on Sunday 5 May at Grantham.

This annual event, which has been running for many years, provides opportunities for competition for more than 100 East Midlands swimmers of all ages, both in the competitive event and in lanes for time-only swims.

The event involved lots of fun, fitness and friendship as well as many fast times, with a highlight being a new British record of 29.86 seconds in the women’s 25-29 backstroke from Georgia Hohmann of Nottingham Leander (subject to ratification). She also swam under the old record time twice later on in the relays.

In addition to the usual 50m events for each age group, which include 4 x 50m relays and some 6 x 25m relays for older swimmers, this year also saw the introduction of a new mixed 8 x 25m cannon relay to round off the gala.

The event was won comfortably by Nottingham for the fourth year running, with exciting competition for second place between Leicestershire, who eventually took the runner up spot, and Lincolnshire Northants in fourth.

If you are registered with an East Midlands club and would like to take part in this gala, which is held annually around this time of year, please contact your county Masters representative.
