Emma Gage reaches podium as Masters mix it with top seniors

Masters world champion Emma Gage was among the top Masters mixing it with the best senior and junior age group swimmers at last week’s ASA National Winter Meet (25m) 2015.

A handful of Masters swimmers made the trip to Ponds Forge, Sheffield for the short course meet with Gage – who won five medals at this year’s World Masters Championships in Kazan – the only one to reach the podium with 50m Freestyle bronze.

Swimming for Stockport Metro, the 26-year old clocked a PB 24.85 – more than 0.5 seconds faster than the existing Masters world record of 25.42 – in the final to touch behind Anna Hopkin (24.44) and Rebecca Guy (24.77).

Gage also helped the Stockport Metro team to three relay medals, with silvers in the 4x100m Free and 4x200m Free, and bronze in the 4x100m Medley.

East Leeds’ 42-year old Kirsten Cameron ducked under the nine minute barrier to finish 30th in the 800m Freestyle in 8:58.31 while 41-year old Team Ipswich swimmer Zoe Cray was 0.54 seconds faster than her own Masters world record as she finished 36th in the 50m Backstroke in 29.30.

Adam Freundlich reaches two finals

Long Eaton’s Adam Freundlich, who won both 100m and 200m Breaststroke titles in the 25-29 years age group at October’s ASA National Masters Championships, made the open finals in both events.

The 27-year old shaved a couple of seconds of his time from the ASA Masters Champs to finish 10th in the 100m Breast in 1:01.95 after a 1:05.56 heat.

He then sliced six seconds off his 200m Breast time from October, finishing eighth in the open final in 2:14.45 as Calum Tait – who finished fifth in the 200m Breaststroke at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – took the spoils in 2:05.42.

East Leeds’ Alistair Crawford – who won four golds in the 30-34 yrs age group in October – also secured a finals session swim, finishing seventh in the B final of the 50m Butterfly.

Meanwhile, 30-year old Carnforth’s Sophie Casson, who set a world record at the ASA National Masters Championships two months ago, finished 26th in the 400m Freestyle after a 4:18.76 effort.
