Kath Tunnicliffe completes hat-trick of backstroke titles

Kath Tunnicliffe sealed her hat-trick of British backstroke titles with a third national record in the penultimate session of the British Masters Championships.

The Etwall Eagles swimmer had already picked up the 50m and 100m Back crowns in the 65-69 Years age group, setting British records in both events.

And she completed the clean sweep of backstroke golds with a three-second British record in the 200m event.

Tunnicliffe ultimately came home in 3:18.35, cruising under Helen Trippe’s old record of 3:21.96 from 2011.

Sophie Casson lowers 15-year old European record

The women’s 200m Backstroke proved to be one of the most exciting of the meet with Carnforth Otters swimmer Sophie Casson also on record-breaking form.

Casson, who set a world record in the 1500m Freestyle on day one in Aberdeen, beat Jo Corben’s 15-year old European record in the 30-34 Years age group.

She clocked 2:18.76 to win her gold, beating the old record of 2:22.52.

Corben also won gold in her age group, clocking 2:24.61 to finish just 0.55 seconds behind her own 45-49 Years world record from last year’s European Championships in London.

In the men’s 200m Back, Trafford Metro’s Alec Johnson was the star of the show, becoming the first British man to break 2:30 in the 55-59 Years age group.

Johnson clocked 2:29.49 to win his gold, beating Martin Fenner’s national record of 2:33.80 from earlier this year.

Mike Hodgson sets fourth individual record of British Champs

Guildford City’s Mike Hodgson set his fourth individual record of the meet with a European record in the men’s 100m Breaststroke.

The 50-year old already held the British marker, courtesy of a 1:10.13 effort in Swansea in March.

But he added the European record to his collection, continuing his excellent form with a 1:09.28 effort.

The British record also went in the 55-59 Years age group as Newbury’s Dave Milburn stopped the clock on 1:13.62.

Aberdeen and Basingstoke relays continue to tear up record books

The relay events saw another three British records smashed in session seven.

Aberdeen Dolphins’ men took down their third men’s senior age group relay record of the meet.

The quartet of Stuart McIntosh, Robert Bryce, Eddie Watson and Jack Watson were nearly 30 seconds under the old marker of 8:26.26 as they clocked 7:57.95.

The British record also went in the 160-199 Years age group as Brighton Dolphins won gold in 8:44.44.

The South Coast club fielded Andrew Farrell, Paul Allen, Christopher Tait and Matthew Lambert; the same quartet who broke the British 4x100m Free record on day two in Scotland.

The final record of the session came in the Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay as Basingstoke Bluefins won gold in the 200-239 Years age group.

Liz Godfrey, Spencer Turner, Ollie Espinasse and Fleur Parker set a new marker of 2:02.49.

The quartet had already lowered the British records in all three mixed freestyle relays.
