East Leeds set the first world record of the 2022 Masters Nationals

The second session on the opening day of the Swim England Masters National Championships delivered the first world record of the meet, with multiple European and British records set too.

It was East Leeds who put themselves into the world record books with an exceptional performance in the 160+ Years Men’s 4x50m Freestyle Team.

East Leeds’ team made up of Paul Clemence, Chris Knee, Samuel Lawman and Alistair Crawford raced to the wall to set a scintillating time of a 1:32.86 as they became the new world record holders.

The quartet beat the previous record by just 0.68 as they became the first to set a world record at the 2022 Swim England Masters National Championships.

They weren’t the only team to break the record barrier in the Men’s 4x50m Freestyle, as Warrender’s 240+ Year team became the new British record holders.

Ian Mckay, Jason Kenney, Keith Johnston and Mark Jones took up the swim for the club as they set an impressive time of a 1:51.51 to knock three seconds off the previous benchmark time.

There was also a new record set in the Women’s 4x50m Freestyle event thanks to the 120+ Years team from Trafford Metro.

The squad made up of Helen Sadler, Holly Booth, Louisa Zolkiewski and Victoria Cunningham set a new British best time in 1:48.50.

Three Mixed Medley Team records

Three records came in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Team with teams from Woking, Trafford Metro and Birmingham Masters all setting record times.

Woking’s 200+ Years team of Michelle Ware, David Bryant, Michael Hodgson and Jennie Clarke were the standout stars however, breaking the European record time with a time of 4:25.65.

The time was six seconds faster than the previous best time set at the LEN European Masters Championships and a further second quicker than the previous British record.

Another record came in the 100+ Years event with Trafford Metro’s team setting a new British best by nearly three seconds.

The team of Louisa Zolkiewski, James Simpson, Christopher Knight and Victoria Cunningham touched the wall in 4:10.23.

It was Knight’s second record of the day after the swimmer set a new Men’s 31-34 Years 1500m Freestyle British record in the opening session.

Birmingham Masters swimming club also put their name into the record books as they set the 320+ Year’s British record.

The team of Arthur Lowe, Keith Ingram, Judy Wilson and Pauline Cooke set a time of 7:33.28 with the first ever time in the event for a British team.

Hoyle and Corben hit European record times

Jo Corben and Julie Hoyle stole the show in the Women’s 100m Backstroke as the pair both came away with new European and British records.

Harrogate’s Julie Hoyle set the new European best in the Women’s 60-64 Years event with a time of 1:13.93.

The time lowered the previous European record by 0.33 and the British by 0.60 in a sensational swim from the 60-year-old swimmer.

S D Trojan’s swimmer Corben also got in on the act with the swimmer setting a 1:06.52, which gave her the European record in the 50-54 Years category.

Corben’s time was just less than half a second faster than the previous effort as she added her name to the record books.

The pair weren’t the only new record holders in the 100m Backstroke, as Elizabeth Godfrey became the British record holder in the 40-44 Years event.

The Basingstoke swimmer’s time of a 1:07.51 was more than two seconds clear of her nearest competitor in what was an impressive performance.

Three more European records broken

Three European records were broken in the Women’s 200m Freestyle events in action packed middle part of the session.

One of those was set by Jane Asher, who added to her ever growing list of records with another in Sheffield.

Her time of a 4:04.99 knocked more than a minute off the top European time in the 90-94 Years event.

Sally Winter and Alyson Fordham also added new European record times in the event after a pair of Bishop Stortford swimmers produced an impressive display.

Winter set a time of 2:28.07 as she knocked 0.42 off the previous European best in the 60-64 Years category, whilst Fordham’s 2:33.14 saw her take nearly a second off the previous British record time as she joined her teammate as a European record holder.

A dominant display from Fleur Turner saw her achieve a new British record time.

She was almost 10 seconds ahead of her nearest challenger as she led the field with a time of 2:12.63.

In the Men’s 200m Freestyle, there was a further British record set as Steve Grossman took the new best time in the 70-74 Years race.

Grossman, racing for Wellingborough, time was a 2:28.32 which was an impressive 17 seconds clear of his nearest rival in the event.
