Birmingham to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have confirmed the 2022 Commonwealth Games will be hosted by English city Birmingham.

The Games, which will be known as Birmingham 2022, are expected to take place from 27 July – 7 August 2022.

The competition will be 20 years since Manchester 2002 – the last time the Games were held in England.

London is the only other English city to have hosted the Games, staging the second British Empire Games in 1934.

A defining moment for this truly Commonwealth city

“We warmly congratulate Birmingham and England on today’s announcement,” said CGF President Louise Martin.

“It is a defining moment for this truly Commonwealth city.

“With its rich history, cultural diversity, youthful dynamism and ambitious spirit, Birmingham embodies all that we cherish about the Commonwealth.”

The road to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games continued in Sheffield last week at the Swim England National Winter Championships.

James Guy and Aimee Willmott were among the English athletes to secure consideration times at the meet.
