Tai completes Commonwealth three-peat as backstroke stars shine for Team England

Alice Tai secured a third successive Commonwealth Games title as she headlined another successful evening for Team England swimmers on day three in Glasgow.

The Paralympic champion lowered the Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s S9 100m Backstroke to 1:11.93 as she added to her gold medals won at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, completing a remarkable Commonwealth three-peat.

Team England teammates Brooklyn Hale (1:16.27) and Isabella Haynes (1:17.52) also featured in the final, finishing fifth and eighth respectively.

The medal tally for Team England’s swimmers was further boosted by silver and bronze in the Men’s 200m Backstroke, before the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay squad rounded off the evening with another silver medal.

Ollie Morgan continued his impressive Games with a third silver medal in Glasgow, touching in 1:56.44 in the Men’s 200m Backstroke. Luke Greenbank was close behind to claim bronze in 1:56.58, securing the first individual Commonwealth Games medal of his career.

Jack Skerry also impressed in the final, improving on his heats swim to finish seventh in 2:00.62.

The final medal of the night came in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay, where Gabe Shepherd, Tom Dean, James Guy and Max Litchfield combined to claim silver in a time of 7:04.98.

Cam Brooker, Jacob Mills and Jacob Whittle also earned silver medals for their contributions during the heats.

Elsewhere, Lauren Cox recorded a fifth-place finish in the Women’s 100m Backstroke final, stopping the clock in 1:00.35.

Ed Mildred and Jacob Peters both featured in a high-quality Men’s 100m Butterfly final, placing sixth and eighth respectively with times of 51.59 and 52.72.

Jacob Mills returned to the pool later in the session for the Men’s 50m Freestyle final, producing a faster swim than in the heats to finish seventh overall in 22.19.

Seventeen-year-old Amelie Blocksidge gained valuable Commonwealth Games experience in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle, finishing seventh on her debut Games in a time of 16:27.55.

Earlier in the day, several Team England swimmers secured places in upcoming finals. Freya Anderson and Leah Schlosshan advanced to the Women’s 100m Freestyle final as the sixth and seventh fastest qualifiers after posting times of 54.79 and 54.82 respectively. Eva Okaro remains in contention as second reserve after clocking 55.15.

Adam Ramsay-Peaty also progressed comfortably in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, qualifying third fastest for the final in 26.82. Max Morgan finished 10th overall in 27.93 and will be second reserve.

In the Women’s 100m Butterfly, Emily Richards and Lucy Fox narrowly missed out on qualification but will be first and second reserves for the final after recording times of 58.85 and 1:00.27.

Four medals, multiple finalists and Tai’s remarkable Commonwealth three-peat ensured Team England ended day three with plenty to celebrate as competition continues in Glasgow.
