Adam Peaty powers to second gold in Sheffield

Adam Peaty was just 0.06 seconds shy off his own world record as he won a second gold on day two of the British Swimming Championships 2017.

The Loughborough University swimmer won the 50m Breaststroke title in 26.48, clocking the second fastest time in history, only behind his own world record of 26.42 from the 2015 World Championships.

The world and Olympic 100m Breaststroke champion had already booked his spot at the 2017 World Champs, winning 100m Breast gold on the opening night in Sheffield.

All eyes were on Peaty again on day two at Ponds Forge as he qualified fastest from the morning 50m Breast heats in 26.62.

And while he fell agonisingly short of his own lifetime best, Peaty admitted he could have no complaints with his form at this stage of the season.

“I feel good with that,” said Peaty. “I didn’t expect to go that fast but that’s a great time for me early in the season and hopefully we can lower it.

“It’s been a great move to Loughborough. I’m getting a lot more time to train rather than travel. It’s a professional environment and we’re striving for better things. Hopefully in the next few months we can see those results.”

Loughborough take sprint double as Atkinson wins 50m Fly

Charlotte Atkinson won the other sprint event on day two, claiming gold in the 50m Butterfly.

The Loughborough University swimmer ducked under 27 seconds for the first time to take the touch in 26.81, becoming the ninth fastest Brit of all time in the process.

“I’m so happy,” said Atkinson. “I wasn’t expecting that so I’m buzzing. I’ve always made finals but never medals so to come out of there with a gold feels amazing.”

City of Derby’s fastest qualifier Sophie Yendell was second home, lowering her British 15 Yrs age group record from the heats to touch in 26.90.

Welsh swimmer Alys Thomas took bronze in 26.94 while there was also a British age group record for 16-year old Freya Anderson as the Ellesmere College swimmer came home fifth in 27.02.
