Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games nomination policy is amended

The nomination policy for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been amended following the rearrangement of the FINA World Championships.

FINA announced in February that the 19th World Championships, which was scheduled to take place between 13-29 May in Japan, was being switched to 14-30 July 2023.

It then confirmed, however, there would be a World Championships in 2022 to help ‘maximise opportunities for established and emerging aquatics athletes’.

This is taking place in Budapest, Hungary, from 18 June to 3 July.

The original May date for the World Championships was also a potential opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Now, with the change in dates, this is no longer the case, leading to an alteration to the Swimming and Para-swimming Nomination Policy.

Earlier than planned

Commonwealth Games England and the Swimming Management Group have approved the changes.

Grant Robins, Team England swimming team leader for Birmingham 2022, said: “The beauty of this amendment is that swimming and para-swimming team will now be nominated and confirmed earlier than initially planned.

“This means preparations for the rearranged World Championships and the Commonwealth Games can begin in late April for a full training and competition cycle.

“We’re now looking forward to the British Championships in Sheffield next month where those swimmers who have not been pre-selected for the squad will be aiming to achieve the consideration times for Birmingham.”
