Freya Anderson decimated the British 15 Yrs Age Group record for 100m Freestyle with a standout performance on the opening day of the 2016 European Junior Swimming Championships.

The English swimmer, coached by Alan Bircher at Ellesmere College Titans, put paid to the oldest record in the books for the 15 years age group. She set 54.99 to qualify fastest from her morning heats.

Halsall’s record falls

Three-time World Championship medallist Fran Halsall set the previous marker of 55.40 to finish fourth in the 100m Free final at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Anderson, whose previous best was 56.40 from the 2016 British Championships in Glasgow, cut nearly half a second off the old record. She split 26.82 out and 28.17 on the way home.

She ducked under the old marker for a second time in the semi-finals, clocking 55.37 to progress second fastest into the final.

The 15-year old finished the day with her first medal of the Championships. She clocked a 55.59 opening split as the British 4x100m Freestyle Relay quartet won bronze.
