Swim England squad gear up for Luxembourg Euro Meet
January 31, 2025A team of 31 swimmers are travelling to Luxembourg as part of a Swim England group competing at the country’s annual Euro Meet.
The event, which marks its 25th year in 2025, offers the perfect opportunity for some early season long course racing and provides some of the nation’s young athletes with a taste of international competition.
The majority of Swim England’s Youth Performance Squad will be competing at the meet as they look to develop their arena skills against some world class opposition, including Paris 2024 medallists Nicolò Martinenghi and Maxime Grousset.
Amongst those making the trip are a number of European Junior International medallists, such as Filip Nowacki, Phoebe Cooper and Jacob Mills.
They were part of a British team that recorded the nation’s highest medal haul since 2018 at least year’s European Junior Championships, which also consisted of six more members of the Luxembourg-bound squad.
That included Commonwealth Youth Games star Skye Carter, European Junior silver medallist Jasmine Carter and City of Leeds’ Gabriel Shephard.
Four-time 2024 National Winter champion, Amalie Smith, is also a part of the group that will take to the pool from Friday 31 January to Sunday 2 February.
All the information on how to follow the competition throughout the weekend will be available on the event’s website.
‘Vital arena experience’
Danielle Brayson, Swim England National Technical Lead for Swimming, said it was an important for the swimmers to gain more international racing experience.
“For a number of our swimmers, this will be their first long course swims of the season,” she said.
“They will be aiming to perform well in the heats and book themselves a second swim and gain that vital arena and finals experience.
“It will be great if they all swim well but the important thing is that they take in the experience throughout the three days and use it as preparation for their target events later in the year.
“We know it will be a high-level meet so we’re all really looking forward to seeing each and every one of them compete in Luxembourg.”
Also heading to the competition are a team of 24 athletes representing Swim England South East, which features a number of swimmers that are also part of the national talent pathway.
