Mildred brings the curtain down on Winter Champs with new British best

The final day of the Swim England National Winter Championships 2025 brought the curtain down on an incredible four days of racing at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. From world records to British bests and thrilling finishes, the competition showcased the very best performances in the pool.

Edward Mildred (Manchester Performance Centre) delivered one of the standout moments of the meet, claiming gold in the 200m Butterfly with a time of 1:50.64 – his first ever British record.

Bath Performance Centre’s Joshua Gammon took silver in 1:51.17, while Luke Greenbank (Loughborough Performance Centre) secured bronze in 1:55.33.

Manchester Performance Centre’s Poppy Maskill (S14) opened the para events in stunning fashion, setting a new world record in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:20.82. Her teammate, Harry Stewart (S14), followed up with another world best in the Open/Male event, stopping the clock at 2:08.53.

Reflecting on her performance, Maskill said:

“I’m very happy with that as it was my first competition back this season and I am doing a lot better than I expected to.”

The Open/Male 100m Freestyle was another highlight of the meet, producing a thrilling finish where just 0.04 seconds separated the top three.

Repton’s Jacob Whittle edged the win in 46.98, narrowly ahead of Cameron Brooker from Bath Performance Centre (47.01) and Gabriel Shepherd of City of Leeds (47.02).

Whittle said:

“It was a really good race, really pleased with it. I think I’m still learning a little bit because I haven’t swum short course in two years.

“It was a really tight finish and you never know who’s going to come through in the last 10m, so you get your head down and get your hand on the wall as quick as you can.”

In the para events, Olivia Newman-Baronius (Maxwell, S14) broke the MC 100m Butterfly world record twice in one day – first in the heats and then again in the final with 1:02.20, edging out Maskill who clocked 1:02.47.

The Female 100m Butterfly title went to Betsy Wizard of Northampton in 57.38, rounding off a strong performance to close her championships on a high.

Wizard said:

“I just wanted to go sub 58 because I’ve been trying to go under that time for a long time and I was so close last year, so I am just happy that I was able to go the time I went. I also did a 50m PB in that race as well although it was a 100m race.”

The competition concluded with the 4x50m Freestyle relays, once again featuring three Team England exhibition squads in a preview of Glasgow 2026.

Team Inspire took the win in 1:32.06 ahead of Team Unity and Team Performance. The fastest club team was Mount Kelly, finishing fourth in 1:33.03.

Team Inspire featured Alexander Cohoon, Hannah Capron, Kate Clifton and Joe Litchfield, giving fans a glimpse of the talent potentially set to represent England on the Commonwealth Games stage.

As the championships draw to a close, the performances over the past four days have set an exciting tone for the year ahead. With world records falling and British swimmers showing their strength, all eyes now turn to 2026.
