Relay excitement and more records broken during electric atmosphere on day three

Day three of the GoCardless Swim England National Winter Championships was packed with drama, speed and record-breaking performances, culminating in the electrifying Team England exhibition relays that brought the crowd to its feet.

One of the most thrilling races of the night was the Open/Male 50m Freestyle final, where the entire field finished within just 1.01 seconds of each other.

Seventeen-year-old Gabriel Shepherd from City of Leeds stormed to victory in 21.24, edging out Alexander Cohoon of Loughborough Performance Centre who touched in 21.31, while Abduljabar Adama from Mount Kelly claimed bronze with 21.44.

Para-swimmers continued to make history with a series of world record-breaking performances. William Ellard (S14) of Manchester Performance Centre set a new mark in the 100m Freestyle, while Callie-Ann Warrington (S10) of Hackney Anaconda broke the world record in the morning session and then repeated the feat in the evening.

Poppy Maskill (S14), also representing Manchester Performance Centre, added her name to the record books with another stunning swim in the same event.

In the Female 50m Backstroke, Blythe Kinsman from Manchester Performance Centre claimed gold in 27.04 after a fiercely contested race, finishing just ahead of Isabelle Leigh from the University of Nottingham in 27.11 and Flawia Kamzol of Mount Kelly in 27.19.

Reflecting on her performance, Kinsman said:

“I thought the race went well. Short course has never been my strong point so it’s always good to focus on some skills like starts and turns and really nail the underwaters. So that was kind of just like my process going into the race.”

Amalie Smith continued her remarkable run in the Individual Medley events, adding the 100m IM title to her collection after already winning the 200m and 400m IM earlier in the championships. Her consistency and versatility have been among the standout stories of the meet.

The Open/Male 100m Backstroke final was another highlight, featuring some of Great Britain’s top backstrokers: Oliver Morgan, Cameron Brooker, Luke Greenbank, and Jack Skerry. Cameron Brooker finished first in 49.82, becoming only the second Brit ever to break the 50-second barrier in this event. The only other swimmer to achieve this feat is British record holder Oliver Morgan, who finished second this time around.

Joshua Gammon of Bath Performance Centre delivered a commanding performance in the Open/Male 100m Butterfly final, taking gold in 49.49 and reinforcing his reputation as one of the country’s leading butterfly specialists.

Speaking after the race, Gammon said:

“It felt really good (…) I’m just gaining some racing experience and short course is perfect for that – just trying to execute all those little bits, those turns, those underwaters.”

The evening concluded with the Team England exhibition relays, a showcase of speed and teamwork that thrilled the spectators. The winning team, ‘Team Performance’, of Oliver Morgan, Sienna Robinson, Jacob Peters, and Kate Clifton produced a superb swim to take the top spot in 1:40.96, capping off a day filled with exceptional performances and unforgettable moments.
