Para-athletes shine on day two of the National Winter Championships

Day two of the GoCardless Swim England National Winter Championships saw para-athletes steal the spotlight with six world records in Sheffield.

Bruce Dee (S6) was the star of the morning session, breaking the 100m Breaststroke world record in 1:20.35 before returning later in the day to lower it again to 1:19.80 – making him the first S6 para athlete to swim the event under 1:20.

Poppy Maskill (S14) added to the excitement with a stunning 100m Backstroke swim of 1:03.50. Reflecting on her performance, Maskill said:

“It was one of my first races back this season so I was quite happy with the time. I thought I was going to be a lot slower than I was. I didn’t think I would break the World Record but I really wanted to because I thought it was a good aim.”

William Ellard (S14) once again produced two exceptional swims. After already breaking two world records on the opening day of the championships, he lowered his 200m Freestyle record from yesterday yet again with 1:48.99.

Only a few hours later, he broke the 100m Backstroke World Record in 55.91. Speaking after his second and third World Records of the meet, Ellard said:

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool. This morning I did the 200m Freestyle. Obviously, coming up against the able-bodied guys, I expected to make it into maybe the B final, but they are very competitive going into a Commonwealth Games year.

And then the 100m Backstroke I didn’t put out the best race, but I had a good underwater off the last wall and went for it in the last 10 metres and broke the World Record!”

Iona Winnifrith (S7) impressed with a 100m Breaststroke world record of 1:25.17, and Callie-Ann Warrington (S10) rounded off the para achievements with a rapid 50m Freestyle in 26.90.

Hector Pardoe from Loughborough University produced one of the standout swims of the day in the Men’s 1500m Freestyle. Despite not featuring in the fastest heat, Pardoe showed incredible determination and race strategy to clock 14:57.31 – a time that proved unbeatable and secured him the gold medal.

The evening concluded with a thrilling Women’s 50m Breaststroke final, where Repton’s Imogen Clark powered to victory in 29.60 – the only swimmer to dip under 30 seconds. Having already claimed gold in the 100m Breaststroke yesterday, this marks her second title of the championships.

Imogen said afterwards:

“I was just trying to up my stroke rate. This morning was a little bit low, I think off the back of yesterday doing the 100. So I tried to up my rate which I did and yeah, just a good race.”

Tomorrow promises another exciting day in Sheffield, with the Team England relay exhibition featuring potential Commonwealth Games athletes to round off the evening. Former swimmer Michael Gunning will also be on site throughout the day.
