Simmonds and Pavoni among stars on show at British Summer Championships

Lizzie Simmonds and Roberto Pavoni are among the top English swimmers at next week’s 2016 British Summer Championships in Sheffield.

Backstroke specialist Simmonds has won medals at world, European and Commonwealth levels in her career.

The 25-year old Bath University swimmer is set to line up in the 100m and 200m Backstroke. She won silver (100m) and gold (200m) in those events at this year’s British Championships in London.

The 100m Back could be one of the races of the meet in the senior age group. Stockport Metro’s Lauren Quigley finished seventh in last year’s World Championship final while Scotland’s Kathleen Dawson won bronze at this year’s European Championships in London.

Pavoni is also a European medallist and comes to Sheffield on the back of victory at the National Open Water Festival.

The Loughborough University swimmer lines up in the 200m IM in Sheffield, having won the British title in London in April.

Pavoni’s Loughborough teammates Caleb Hughes and Alice Dearing also come to Sheffield on the back of open water victories this month.

Dearing claimed World Junior gold over 10km in Hoorn while Hughes grabbed senior European bronze in the 5km time trial.

England’s European Junior champions return to Sheffield

A host of top junior swimmers look set to light up the age group events in Sheffield.

Newcastle’s Emily Large has enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning 200m Fly bronze at the British Championships in April. The 15-year old then added gold with a British Age Group record on her European Junior debut in Hungary last month.

Ellesmere College Titans pair Freya Anderson and Taz Pugh also come to the Summer Champs on the back of European Junior golds.

Anderson claimed the 100m Free title in Hungary while Pugh, who won seven golds at the 2015 British Summer Champs, triumphed in the 200m Back.

Joe Litchfield and Tom Derbyshire were the two English gold medallists in the boys’ events at last month’s European Juniors.

Doncaster Dartes swimmer Litchfield lines up in six events next week while Royal Wolverhampton School’s Derbyshire takes on four.

Paralympic team to warm up for Rio in Sheffield

All but two of the English swimmers heading to this summer’s Paralympic Games are set to contest the MC events in Sheffield.

Four-time Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds will go in the 50m, 100m and 400m Free as well as the 200m IM.

Paralympic gold medallists Oliver Hynd, Sascha Kindred, Bethany Firth, Jon Fox and Josef Craig will also be in action.

The 2016 British Summer Championships take place from 26 – 31 July at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
