Here to make an impact on Manchester, our nation and beyond
Why Manchester Met?
Manchester Met is a great, modern university, fuelled by an ambition to discover, disseminate knowledge and make higher education accessible to those with passion and potential.
Through our commitment to excellence in education, research and collaboration, we strive to be a catalyst for positive change. Change in our city, in our world and in every one of the lives we touch.
With over 38,000 students and 4,500 colleagues in Manchester, it’s why we’re proud to be one of the most popular universities in the UK.
Our campus is a hive of activity. An environment for staff and students to thrive. To teach and learn, explore and discover, create and invent. A place to push the boundaries of what’s possible, achieve personal bests and work with global partners to help shape the world.
Sporting ambitions
We have big ambitions for our future in sport and are excited to welcome athletes who will help us rise to that challenge. Our performance programme aims to develop top-class, student-centred clubs and individuals and we support over 70 teams across more than 40 sports at our impressive facilities.
Student life
If you wanted to create the perfect setting for your university experience, what would you include? A diverse city, home to a melting pot of cultures? A buzzing music scene? A capital of the sports world? Thriving local economy? Fashion-forward shops? Foodie heaven? Vibrant nightlife?
Manchester’s got it all, and plenty more besides. That’s what makes it a perfect setting for students – because coming here doesn’t begin and end with studying. You’ll learn a lot but you’ll also do a lot.

Swimming at Manchester Met
We are fortunate to link in with City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team (COMAST) for our performance swimming programme. The team has a track record of success and has been responsible for helping swimmers deliver at the highest level including Olympic finals, Paralympic Champions as well as medalists at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, World University and European Championships.
The swim team is based at the Commonwealth games facility in the city centre, which is a Swim England National and Regional Performance Centre. The partnership between the University, the swim team and the city means that dual career pathways are strong and supported.
Individual training and squad placement are specified based on events which is to be discussed with the coaches at the start of the season. Places in all COMAST squads are subject to decisions from the COMAST squad coaches.
Pro Squad
This group is led by coaches Mark Rose and Lewis Fox, both having coached in various roles on England and GB teams. Swimmers have access to up to 24 hours of pool training as well as a full strength and conditioning programme. In addition, swimmers can access a range of support services including nutrition, psychology and physio. Swimmers applying for this squad must be competing at British trials level or equivalent.
National Squad
This group is led by Coach Matt Turner. This squad has access to up to 20 hours of pool training plus strength and conditioning sessions. In addition, swimmers have access to nutrition and personal development support. Swimmers applying for this squad must be competing at National level and above.
Senior squad
Swimmers can access up to 12 hours of training each week, with options to compete at open meets up to national level, but also for those who would like to swim for fitness.
Manchester Met Swimming
The University’s own swimming club offers up to seven hours of pool training and one strength and conditioning session each week with options for swimmers who want to compete at a university level (BUCS events, Manchester Varsity, and BUSL) and those who want to swim recreationally. This is a great option for those who are looking to swim but are unsure if they want to commit to the COMAST programme.
