The County showdown - who will rule the pool in Sheffield?

The stage is set and the excitement is building as the 2025 GoCardless Swim England National County Team Championships return to Ponds Forge in Sheffield this Sunday (5 October).

With over 900 swimmers from more than 30 counties ready to race, the atmosphere promises to be electric – think face paint, chants, and team colours flying high.

Last year’s event delivered drama and thrills in equal measure. Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire (B&B) took the Division 2 crown with 469.5 points, narrowly edging out Middlesex who finished second with 464. Staffordshire claimed third with 451 points, earning their promotion to Division 1 for this year’s showdown.

Meanwhile, Kent flexed their strength in Division 1, as they took home the win with 470.5 points.

The County Team Champs are always split into two divisions, each featuring up to 20 teams competing simultaneously in two 25m pools. Division 2 heats begin just seconds after Division 1, creating a fast-paced, non-stop spectacle.

Every race counts, with points awarded from 20 for first place down to 1 for twentieth. At the end of the day, the top four teams in Division 2 earn promotion, while the bottom four in Division 1 face relegation. It’s a format that keeps the pressure high and the competition fierce.

This year, all eyes will be on the newly promoted teams to see if they can shake up the Division 1 standings. Will B&B continue their winning streak?
