Cumberlidge can't wait to soak up Commonwealth Games atmosphere

David Cumberlidge says he cannot wait to soak up the atmosphere as part of Team England’s Commonwealth Games squad on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The 21-year-old completed a 50m and 100m freestyle double in the British Summer Championships last year at Ponds Forge.

He set a lifetime best time of 22.03 in the 50m event which confirmed him as the fourth fastest English swimmer of all time – and was under the Team England consideration time.

Now Cumberlidge is looking forward to competing in two major events this year – the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships in Glasgow.

Good experience

In a video interview with the University of Edinburgh, Cumberlidge said: I’m most looking forward to the atmosphere when I get out there.

“It’s an open-air pool and the Australians love their swimming. That can be a really good experience.

“After the Commonwealths, it will be the European Games in August. I’m hoping to have a good cycle building up to that and hopefully race well.”
