The first qualification you require for any of the aquatic disciplines is the Swim England Assistant Teacher or Assistant Coach Award, which focuses on ‘how to teach/coach’ and ‘what to teach/coach’.

A Swim England Assistant Teacher or Assistant Coach Award qualifies you to teach or coach in a support role. You will be able to actively support a more senior qualified or licensed Teacher or Coach to deliver a pre-prepared session. You will be eligible for a number of Continued Professional Development (CPD) seminars and, when ready, to progress to a Teacher or Coach award, or take on a new discipline.

Assistant Teacher / Assistant Coach courses typically take up to four days, either in a face to face course, or through blended learning; a mixture of online work and 2 days face to face.

Teaching / Coaching Qualification next steps

Progressing to to a full Teacher/Coach qualification – to work on your own without supervision (other than lifeguard cover) you are required to hold the Level 2 Swim England Teaching or Coaching qualification, which focuses on ‘how to teach/coach’ and ‘what to teach/coach’.

A Swim England/UKCC Teacher/Coach Certificate qualifies you to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of consecutive sessions within the context of a self-prepared scheme of work. You will be eligible for more Continued Professional Development (CPD) Seminars and may be able to train to take on new disciplines or progress to the Senior Coach qualification.

Teacher/Coach courses typically take up to 8 days, either in a face to face course or through a blended learning course, comprising a mixture of 20-25 hours of online learning along with 5-6 days of face to face learning.

For those coaches working in swimming there is a third qualification available which is the Senior Coach certificate. This course is for committed and experienced swim coaches who are working with large groups of swimmers or heading up a swim coaching programme.

The Senior Coach qualification is a year long course of study which includes both online learning, development days and practical poolside sessions. Learners are assigned a coach mentor for the duration of the qualification programme.

Continued Professional Development (CPD) Seminar Programme

Once a coach is qualified it is good practice to continually update and add to their knowledge, this is done via Continued Personal Development Seminars.

The current list of seminars is provided on the Swim England calendar, you can refine your search to your local area and types of CPDs.

From time to time, we will offer local specific CPDs which will be advised to clubs via email and the news section on this website.
