Open Water Swimming in London

Open water swimming is a truly different experience to the pool, and one all swimmers should try at least once!

Without the confines of lane ropes or walls, it’s liberating, adventurous and unique.

Open water also appeals to the adrenalin-seekers. Competitive races are often frenetic and fierce, with swimmers hustling and bustling for position.

Where to swim?

London offers a range of options for open water swimming.

Being a large city, we have fewer options than some other regions of the country, but we do have some gems:

Search for lidos and open water venues

London is also the home to a number of outdoor lidos – you can use Swim England’s Poolfinder to search for lidos or open water venues near you.

When to compete?

The Outdoor Swimming Society organises a charity swim in the Serpentine every July while London Marathon run the Swim Serpentine event each September.

You can view a range of upcoming competitions on Swim England’s Open Water hub.

Swim England London Region also hold an annual Open Water Championships, which is usually swum at Surrey Quays. The Championships provides a qualification route into the National Open Water Championships.
