Swim England Officials Courses – UPDATE

Swim England have recently released information with regard to current and future officials training courses;

Following recent government announcements on staying at home, Sport Park and the warehouse are currently closed. This means that we are currently not in a position to send out any Officials Licence packs (new or renewals) or any Judge 1 log books. However, as there are currently no meetings or events taking place we do not consider this to be a major issue and will catch up as soon as things begin to return to normal.

In the meantime, to ensure that we are able to get packs out as soon as possible:

  • For those completing the Judge 1 Online modules – please continue to upload your certificates as per the instructions at the end of the course
  • For those applying for new or renewal licences – please send forms and photos via email wherever possible, to [email protected]

A small number of you have contacted us to express your concern that candidates for the Judge 1 training may not have the opportunity to complete their poolside training within the prescribed timescale, be that 31 July for those on the “old” scheme or within 11 months for the online training, given the current uncertainty around cancellation of competitions.

The British Swimming SOG (swimming officials group) are obviously aware of your concerns but as yet no decision has been made on this, or any other aspect of officials training, including the pool Referee exams scheduled for May and November.

At the moment the situation and corresponding advice is changing daily. Once the position becomes more stable and the British Swimming SOG have had the opportunity to hold a meeting, the outcome will be communicated to all.

Regional swimming events organised by Swim England London could not run without the help of a large number of volunteers; either qualified ‘officials’ who fill roles as referees, starters, timekeepers or judges, as well as event volunteers who assist in the operation of the meet through in a wide variety of roles. Without the vital support of our volunteers who support our meets, these events would not be able to take part.

To get involved with our Swim England London events please visit our Swimming Competitions page to find information about our events and contacts to get involved.

Becoming an official allows you to get involved in swimming competitions at a close and personal level. It is much more enjoyable than sitting on a hot balcony!

Typically an official will start work at their local club, usually starting as a timekeeper. From there they can start to become qualified, working their way via courses and gala experience from J1, J2, J2S and ultimately on to being a qualified referee. We can provide advice on the best way to proceed.

Judge Level 1 Training

Swim England will launch the new Swimming Judge Level 1 Online course from Monday 27th January 2020. Those interested should use the above link to register.

The cost for the course is £20.00 which also includes the License fee once the trainee qualifies as a Judge Level 1.

  • Payment for the Judge Level 1 course can be by card by the individual or by a pre-paid voucher purchased by clubs.
  • The theory section consists of on-line modules, all of which must be successfully completed before any poolside mentoring can be undertaken.
  • An e-certificate will be issued on completion of the on-line modules which must be uploaded onto the Members Options section at swimming.org. Certificates uploaded by noon Monday will ensure workbook is dispatched that week. A photograph must also be uploaded.

For further information about the above course, or for any general information about getting started as an offical, please contact one of the Swim England London Region/County contacts below.
