Any individuals wishing to work with children or adults at risk are required to undertake an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) with a Barred List check.
What is a Barred List check?
A Barred List check is a legal requirement for all individuals applying to work in Regulated Activity. This check will show whether an individual is barred from working with children or adults at risk. The definition of Regulated Activity is outlined below:
- Unsupervised activities teach, train, instruct, care for or supervise children, or provide advice/guidance on well-being, or drive a vehicle only for children
- Work for a limited range of establishments (‘specified places’), with opportunity for contact for example, schools, children’s homes, childcare premises. Not work by supervised volunteers
Once a DBS has been applied for the applicant can then register this with the DBS Update Service for an annual subscription fee of £13, allowing for their DBS certificate to be kept up-to-date and take it with them from role to role, within the same workforce, where the same level of check is required.
By subscribing to the Update Service they can save money and a lot of time completing DBS applications, as they may never need to complete one again.
Please note that they can apply whilst their DBS application is in process, using the application reference number, or using the Disclosure number once they receive their Disclosure certificate.
However, there will only be a 30-day window from when the Disclosure was printed in which to register. After this date they will have to wait until they next go through a check to be able to register.
DBS Application Process
We recently found out that the period for registering the DBS with the Update Service has changed from 19 days to 30 days. This was published in the DBS News that was issued in July.
The link below has been provided by the GBGroup who will be posting it on their landing page this week.
If you send out any information to members regarding the Update Service, please amend your information to reflect this.
