Refreshed CPD helps introduce aquatics sports skills into swimming lessons

Swim England has refreshed a key training tool which helps swimming teachers introduce aquatic sports skills into their existing lessons.

The Bringing the Aquatic Sports to Life Through the Learn to Swim Framework CPD will arm teachers with the confidence to introduce and talk about the aquatic sports in their lessons, and support them to guide learners on their onward journey to a club environment.

Teachers completing the CPD will be able to identify the key skills that need to be developed throughout the seven stages of the Learn to Swim programme for a successful transition into diving, water polo and artistic swimming clubs, as well as highlighting opportunities for those interested in trying out open water swimming.

It is aimed at Level 2 Swimming Teachers over the age of 16 and is a three-hour theory based course with a one-hour practical session.

Upon completion, teachers will be able to:

  • Adapt and deliver current activities at each stage that will encourage and develop the key skills required
  • Be able to recognise participants who demonstrate a natural ability to perform the key skills
  • Be able to signpost participants towards Swim England aquatic sports.

Exciting opportunities

Becky Walker, Swim England’s Club Growth and Programmes Manager, said: “The Learn to Swim to club pathway is so important for the future of aquatic sports.

“This CPD will really help teachers feel equipped to not only identify and nurture essential skills but also encourage a smoother transition from Learn to Swim to a club environment.

“Learners will also be aware that what they are being taught is the backbone of all aquatic sports, which opens up so many exciting opportunities for them.

“By giving teachers a deeper understanding of aquatic sports and the skills required at each stage, we’re helping them become more confident to better guide swimmers on their journey – and that’s such a positive step for everyone involved.”

The CPD was previously known as Developing Discipline Skills in the Learn to Swim Framework and includes a range of updated content.
